The short answer: paper for one-day events with a shifting attendee list, PVC for multi-day events or badge reuse, NFC when connecting attendees is the point. Paper badges wrinkle within a day, PVC cards blow past the budget, and NFC badges go unused because nobody explained what they do. zzzarit has produced all three across different events — here's what we learned.
Three formats, three different jobs
- Paper badges — cheapest and fastest. Good for academic events and seminars where the attendee list keeps changing until the last few days. Not durable enough for multi-day use.
- PVC card badges — worn with a lanyard holder. Durable enough for multi-day conferences or in-house events where badges get reused.
- NFC smart badges — tap a phone to bring up a profile. Best for networking-focused events where attendees need to exchange contact info quickly.
How the cost breaks down
Paper and PVC badges are billed at actual cost because material, size, print method, and quantity shift the unit price. NFC badge stickers are ordered in units of 100 with volume-based tiers, plus a one-time system setup covering profile registration, on-site registration, and writer devices.

How does an NFC badge work?
Tapping a phone against the NFC sticker on the back of the badge brings up the attendee's profile. We also provide an on-site registration system and writer device so profiles can be set up on the spot.
